Bringing Shapes to Life

Motion Design Abstract Storytelling

Motion design exercise telling the story of my life through basic shapes and movement.

My-Life-as-Shapes-1

For a class assignment, I was tasked with creating a 10-second looping video that brings shapes to life. I decided to use this opportunity to tell the story of my life through shapes. My storyboard outlines my thought process and how I used shapes to represent key moments:

1. Marriage: The first frame shows two shapes merging into one, symbolizing my marriage.
2. Moving to Florida: The second frame depicts our move to Florida, represented by shapes leaving home.
3. Living in Germany: Skipping ahead due to the 10 second project breif, a frame shows our move to Germany. Here, a grid of shapes represents the 30 countries we traveled to, with each shape inspired by the flags of these countries.
4. Unexpected Move to Oklahoma: We then get "sucked" into a shape resembling Oklahoma, illustrating our unexpected move due to my husband’s job.
5. Feeling Trapped in Oklahoma: A circle inside Oklahoma represents feeling trapped as we searched for new job opportunities.
6. Temporary Separation: The circle escapes but splits into two, symbolizing my husband moving to Washington DC while I stayed in Oklahoma to finish my degree.
7. Reunion and Celebration: Finally, the shapes reunite and celebrate, looping back to the first frame where we merge into one.
