The Book of Eli

Title Sequence Motion Design

The Book of Eli title sequence was an exercise where I created a title sequence based on an existing movie.

The Book of Eli follows Eli, a lone wanderer in a post-apocalyptic world, protecting the last known Bible. He believes it holds the key to humanity’s salvation. As he travels, he encounters the ruthless Carnegie, who seeks to use the book’s power. Eli befriends Solara, and the climax reveals that he is blind; he has been reciting the Bible from memory. Despite this revelation, Eli’s mission succeeds, passing the book’s knowledge to others and leaving an impact on the devastated world. The film explores themes of faith and survival, with a twist ending that adds depth to the narrative.

Inspired by the film, I designed a title sequence that embodies its themes and atmosphere. Since Eli carries a Bible written in braille, I created the title sequence to be coded and encrypted. Reflecting the dark and scary post-apocalyptic setting, the colors in my design are somber and intense. The sequence also symbolizes Eli’s blindness, with handmade dots on paper and scenes projected on it, represent braille. I included clips from the movie, projected and filmed on my phone, to enhance the visual experience. The titles rise up and disappear, implying the film's spiritual aspect. Additionally, the sound design alludes to deciphering, making sense of the random characters.

Hand made texture: I made braille texture and used a projector screen to project scenes from the movie and recorded it.

Braille and deciphering: Letters represent what we all thought he had in the movie, a form of writing that everyone could understand. The braille represents the surprise at the end showing us how important Eli was

Moments of Darkness: Since Eli was blind, there are moments of fully black throughout the title sequence

Serif Type: I chose serif type to represent the feeling of history and the past

Quick clips of brightness and clouds to represend God, who is talking to Eli throughout the movie.
